Back To School With Accessible Media

Back to School

It's school time again! Students are probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some may feel nervous or a little scared on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. But speaking of new things, we have added a lot of new accessible media titles over the summer. Click here for a list of 44 new titles in topic areas such as: Careers, Computers and Technology, Social Science, and Language Arts. And don't forget to watch out for more new titles to come in our next newsletter.

PEPNet and DCMP: Advocates for Captioning Access

photo of classroom captioning

PEPNet (Postsecondary Education Programs Network) is a U.S. Department of Education/Office of Special Education grant which provides resources and expertise to enhance educational opportunities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This also describes the broad mission of the DCMP (Described and Captioned Media Program). Often PEPNet works in collaboration with the DCMP, each of us lending our particular expertise to assist stakeholders such as teachers, parents, vocational rehabilitation counselors, or administrators.

Both PEPNet and the DCMP advocate for equal access through captioning. DCMP provides guidelines and assistance in captioning media for the classroom, while PEPNet focuses on the use of speech-to-text services, such as CART, C-Print, and Typewell. (Read More)

Exciting News About Video Description

Smith-Kettlewell RERC

The U.S. Department of Education has announced the funding of a new Video Description Research and Development Center (VDRDC). The purpose of the VDRDC will be to advance the research and development of video description, as well as alternative approaches to it, and to improve the accessibility of educational program content delivered via the Internet or through other technological devices (not television) for students who are blind or visually impaired.

Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, a nonprofit independent research institute located in San Francisco, has been awarded a two-year grant to conduct the VDRDC activity. The DCMP, one of several members of a Description Leadership Network that is part of this activity, will have the responsibility to coordinate two Webinars each of the two project years, and these will report on accomplishments of the VDRDC and invite feedback. The first Webinar will be conducted in about six months, and you'll be invited! Watch our newsletter for an announcement concerning registration and for periodic reports on VDRDC activities.

In September, a VDRDC Web site will be up and running. We will provide more information about it in the next newsletter.
