Countdown to Deaf History Month: 2 Weeks to Go!
Robert F. Panara |
Deaf History Month begins on March 13! Continue planning your celebration this week with a look at one of the legendary figures in the field of deaf education. Robert “Bob” Panara is a renowned professor of English, literature, and theater (he helped to found the National Theatre of the Deaf). He is also known as a poet, historian, and authority on deaf figures in literature.
Watch Robert Panara: A Profile on the DCMP YouTube channel for a background about Bob and his history at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology (where he was the first deaf professor) as well as a sampling of interpretive poetry, which includes several short haikus, favorites such as John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields, and even one of Bob’s original poems, On His Deafness.
To access this, or additional media items about or featuring important deaf historical figures (such as Famous Deaf Americans—Part I and Part II, both narrated by Bob Panara—or titles from the Deaf Mosaic series), visit the DCMP website and become a registered member.
If you haven’t done so already, sign up for the DCMP newsletter and watch for our Deaf History Month feature in the upcoming March edition.
