Happy Thanksgiving

Check out our ...fill up on Captioned Media Flyer [PDF] for additional information and titles.

The smell of pumpkin pie and turkey is in the air, so it must be Thanksgiving. This is a time to gather with our families, eat too much, and reflect on all we have to be thankful for. It is also a great time to focus on American history.

DCMP has many titles to help you bring history to life in your classroom. There are classics like Pocahontas and modern heroes like Native American Ella Rodriguez. There are American stories such as Roanoke: The Lost Colony and Native American history with Comparing The Lives of Native Peoples. Consider the possibilities!

Unique Holidays

When you think of holidays in November, the first to come to mind is Thanksgiving. Many schools spend the entire month focused on this one event, year after year. But did you know that almost every day of the month is dedicated to a national holiday? In fact, November is designated as National Peanut Butter Lover's Month. Why not take the opportunity to have fun and try something new? Use November to teach about peanut cultivation (Peanuts), or cooking with peanut butter (Baking Basics: Cookies), or even food allergies (Food Sensitivities: Allergy & Intolerance).

DCMP has titles on almost any topic, so let us help you tap into these unique learning opportunities. To the right you'll find some "bizarre" American holidays and suggestions for videos to help you incorporate them into your November activities.

Accessible Technology

DCMP has been at the forefront of providing accessible educational videos for students with visual impairments and hearing impairments. Students, teachers and parents who are members of DCMP may take advantage of its wide selection of media for educational use.

Besides obvious exposure to educational core content, accessible videos may offer other advantages for classroom instruction. For example, captioned and described videos may serve as creative models for expanding students' vocabulary or modeling methods of storytelling during language arts instruction. Captions may provide models for descriptive, written storytelling, and audio descriptions may serve as examples for the process of verbal storytelling. For students with sensory impairments in inclusive school settings, accessible educational media provides equal access to the school curriculum. Accessible formatting may provide innovative instructional resources for teaching all students in a high-tech, twenty-first century classroom!

DCMP gives thanks to those who support all children and their equal access to a quality education!

Including Samuel

Photo of Dan Habib

Franz Nicolay photo

Before his son Samuel was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, photojournalist Dan Habib rarely thought about the inclusion of people with disabilities. Now he thinks about inclusion every day. Shot and produced over four years, Habib's award-winning documentary film, Including Samuel, honestly chronicles the Habib family's efforts to include Samuel in every facet of their lives. The film also features four other families with varied inclusion experiences, plus interviews with dozens of teachers, young people, parents and disability rights experts.

Including Samuel is a highly personal, passionately photographed film that captures the cultural and systemic barriers to inclusion. DCMP is proud to include this production in our library! You can view it through DCMP, or purchase a copy online from the producer. Also, check out the Including Samuel Web site created by DCMP to help you learn more about inclusion.

  President Obama signing bill

On October 8, President Obama signed into law the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act. The legislation requires smart phones, television programs and other modern communications technologies to be accessible to people with vision or hearing loss. Paul Schroeder, American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), commented about the bill: "It opens the door to the digital age, and gives Americans with visual or hearing impairments equal access to smart phones, emergency broadcast information, the menus and controls on televisions and cable TV guides, and much more." Visit the DCMP Clearinghouse for additional information on important accessibility laws.
