Happy Summer Vacation!

Children's Literature Flyer

A new flyer from the DCMP highlights our collection of children’s literature [PDF] titles.

As May becomes June, millions of students (and their teachers) start thinking about the “fun in the sun” that awaits them during their hiatus from the classroom; however, it’s important to not miss out on the various opportunities for learning!

On hot summer days, nothing beats taking a break to enjoy some quality time in the air conditioning with one of our summer-related DCMP titles. For instance, you could read along with one of our children’s literature titles [PDF], embark on a virtual adventure to Spain, South Asia, or Guatemala, or travel back in time to touch base with some of the most famous “boys of summer.”

Of course, the fun doesn’t end there. The DCMP collection is chock full of engaging, enlightening, and—most importantly—accessible educational videos to keep your students busy throughout the summer! See you in the fall (hopefully sooner)!

ASL Interpreter Training Materials Available

Signs of Development Flyer

Download a new DCMP flyer [PDF] to learn more about new titles available from Signs of Development.

For a few years now, the DCMP has teamed with Signs of Development (SOD) to provide our members with free access to some of the best available ASL training and continuing-education materials from SOD’s WWWorkshops series.

What’s more, qualified interpreters can view these materials for free from DCMP, complete a post-test, and obtain RID- or employer-required CEUs from SOD. (For more information about how to obtain CEUs, or for a complete list of available titles, visit the SOD page on the DCMP website.)

This month we’re pleased to announce the availability of nine brand new titles from the WWWorkshop series. Including topics that range from ASL linguistic features to interpreting in the medical field, these titles are highlighted on a new flyer [PDF] from the DCMP.

Of course, the DCMP also has a large collection of general ASL titles as well as a number of Deaf Culture resources [PDF] available to qualifying members.

We hope that our interpreter clients continue to make use of these important materials; if you know of titles that would be useful to our clients, please recommend them to the DCMP!

DCMP NOW ON FACEBOOK

We’ve launched our Facebook page, making it easier than ever for clients and friends to keep track of the happenings here at the DCMP.

Please tell your friends and colleagues to check us out, and be sure to stop by often to share your thoughts on our wall and discussion boards.

DCMP PARTNERS WITH FAMILYCONNECT

The DCMP is now an official national partner of AFB and NAPVI’s FamilyConnect, a social network and resource center for parents and family members of children with visual impairments.

Visit the DCMP’s profile on FamilyConnect, and be sure to catch AFB Vice President Paul Schroeder’s blog post about described movies.

DB AWARENESS WEEK

As we mentioned last month, Deaf-Blind Awareness Week is June 21–27.

Be on the lookout for an announcement about our recent acquisition of a special Dr. Phil Show episode featuring the “Deaf-Blind Triplets,” which will be available from the DCMP shortly.

DESCRIPTION STANDARDS UPDATES

The Audio Description Coalition is looking for input from professional describers and trainers to be used in the upcoming third edition of its Standards for Audio Description and Code of Professional Conduct for Describers.

Meanwhile, the ACB’s Audio Description Project has published a draft of its standards document as a community-editable wiki in advance of the ACB convention this July. Description professionals and consumers are invited to read and edit the wiki in the spirit of bringing together a diverse range of opinion and best practice regarding description.

The Described and Captioned Media Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by the National Association of the Deaf.
