Back to School Health

School has started, and students are just now settling into their new routines. It is very important for families of students with visual impairments to update school records and provide current eye reports.

With current reports, educators may more accurately identify students' vision needs and determine accommodations or modifications necessary for them to access school curriculum. In addition, these reports may be needed to determine eligibility for adapted materials and textbooks loaned to districts by state instructional resource centers for the blind.

Promoting general wellness is also essential for students with visual impairments. Practicing good health habits promotes better learning. Students should be reminded to eat smart with a well-balanced diet, stay active, and, of course, get adequate sleep. Parents and teachers of students with visual impairments may search for DCMP media titles with description and captioning which address healthcare topics.

Celebrating Halloween

October 31st has become a favorite holiday for children and adults alike. What could be more fun than dressing up as your favorite character and getting free candy? Today some schools celebrate Halloween in a traditional manner and some prefer the alternative of a Fall Harvest Celebration.

Whether you celebrate this time of year with jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating or decorative pumpkins and a fall carnival, DCMP has some great videos for the classroom that the kids will love. There are videos with traditional scary stories, fall foliage, how grain is harvested for bread, and much more. DCMP wants to help you celebrate the return to school with captioned and described media to enhance your classroom.

October 12th is Columbus Day. Americans celebrate the day sailors with Columbus' expedition first sighted land in the New World. Why not take this opportunity to celebrate the spirit of exploration that still makes America great?

DCMP is striving to ensure that children of all "abilities" are able to access educational media by providing captions in both English and Spanish and by providing descriptions. The following titles in the DCMP collection will help you bring this holiday to life for your students.

It is well known that captioned videos are scattered across the web--mixed with the billions of other videos. Searching for such videos on a desired topic can be very difficult. 22frames.com's goal is to aggregate captioned/subtitled videos so that they are easily searchable. Simply enter your keywords in the search box at the top of each page on the site and get a list of relevant videos from multiple hosts like YouTube and Hulu. Users can also browse the gallery-style home page and explore the various categories displayed. Indexing is mostly automated, and content with captions ingrained in the actual picture of the video rather than being separately uploaded overlay text will not be found. Users are also encouraged to submit interesting videos they find on the Internet, but are not yet indexed on the site.

Qualified vendors are ready to caption YouTube content. A lot of educational content is available on YouTube channels like Khan Academy. See more educational video offerings by visiting YouTube EDU. But, while content is available, little of it is captioned. When videos are not accessible, tell the producer or post a comment! Tell your friends about the DCMP YouTube channel and its described and captioned content. DCMP members can also visit the DCMP YouTube channel and easily preview DCMP videos that are available to members in their entirety on the DCMP website.
